Bobby Richardson To Be Guest Speaker At Mt. Calvary Church's Wild Game Banquet
Bobby Richardson, baseball player, will be the guest speaker at the third Annual Wild Game Banquet, which will be held on Thursday, November 6th at 7:00 p.m.
Bobby Richardson joined the New York Yankees when he was 19 years old. Over the next twelve years, Bobby played in more than 1400 games. The Yankees won the American League Pennant nine out of his first ten years. He was named most valuable player in the 1960 World Series. He is still the only player from a losing team to be named MVP in the World Series. He still holds numerous World Series Records including runs-batted-in in a game, runs-batted-in in a series, and hits in a series. Bobby also holds the record for having played in 30 consecutive World Series Games.
Bobby finished as runner-up to Mickey Mantel in the voting for American League MVP in 1962. He was a member of seven American League All Star teams, and he won five consecutive Golden Glove Awards.
After retiring from the Yankees, at the age of 31, Bobby became the baseball coach at The University of South Carolina. In 1975, his team complied a record 51-6. They made it all the way to the College World Series, but they lost to Texas in the final game.
Bobby has also coached at Coastal Carolina College and at Liberty University. He was also the athletic director at Liberty University.
He stepped down from that position in 1990.
Bobby is still active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and he has served as the president of Baseball Chapel for ten years.
Bobby has received many honors over the years including two honorary doctorate degrees and the prestigious Gold Gavel Award for Toastmaster International.
Bobby and his wife, Betsy, now reside in Sumter, South Carolina.The Wild Game Banquet will be held at Mount Calvary Baptist Church Family Life Center on Thursday, November 6th, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. There will be displays, door prizes, food, and fellowship. The Mount Calvary Family Life Center is located at 405 Mount Calvary Road in Dillon.
